# Synchrony Activate vs. Register: What's the Difference?

> Activating and registering your Synchrony card are two different steps. Learn the difference in one minute.

Many people think activating and registering are the same. They're not.

| - | - | - |
| What it does | Turns your card on so you can use it | Creates your online login |
| Where | synchrony.com/activate, phone, or QR code | synchrony.com or the MySynchrony app |
| You need | Account number, security code, last 4 of SSN | Account number, last 4 of SSN, date of birth |
| When | As soon as your card arrives | Any time after you get your card |

## Do I need both?

Activation is a must before using your card. Registration is optional, but it lets you pay bills, view statements, and track spending online.
